After much excitement and anticipation, the Six Nations Championship is almost here!
It kicks off this year on the 4th February and runs through until the 18th March. The first match will see Wales go up against Ireland at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, and we can’t wait to watch and cheer!
Here are a few things you might not know about the Six Nations Championship:
- The Six Nations Championship is one of the oldest sports competitions in the world, starting as the Home Nations Championship in 1883.
- Although the trophy is made mostly of silver, the inside of it has been coated with gold to prevent corrosion caused by champagne.
- Wales were the first nation to complete the Grand Slam when they defeated Ireland in Belfast on March 14th, 1908.
Ireland and Wales have played each other at rugby union since 1882. A total of 133 matches have been played, with Wales winning 70 matches, Ireland winning 56 matches and seven matches drawn.
